Quantum Computing Salaries in 2026: What the Postings Actually Say

A methodology-transparent look at quantum computing salary ranges by function, and the factors — modality, degree, company stage — that move the number most.

Salary guides in this space tend to cite suspiciously precise numbers — "the average quantum engineer earns $X" — without saying where the number came from. We'd rather be upfront: most of what follows is a broad functional framework, not a proprietary survey. But we do have one real anchor worth sharing — most companies don't publish a salary range, but a real slice currently do, straight from live postings rather than a modeled estimate.

What our own listings actually show

Of the roughly 700 active listings on our board right now, 94 disclose a real salary range. That's a small slice — about 13% — and not a random sample: companies willing to publish a number skew toward the ones already comfortable with pay transparency, so treat this as one honest data point, not the market. Within that sample, the median listed salary works out to about $173,000, with individual postings spanning roughly $75,000 up to $425,000.

Broken out by function (categories with at least six disclosed postings, so the average isn't riding on one or two data points): Quantum Hardware roles run a median around $181,000; Operations, about $175,000; Quantum Software, about $172,000; Algorithms & Research, about $167,000; Finance & Legal, about $213,000; Photonics & Optics and Manufacturing & Production both land closer to $149,000. A few real examples: Rigetti's IC Layout Automation Software Engineer role lists $190,000–$220,000; Quantinuum's Senior Ion Trap Fabrication Scientist lists $164,000–$205,000; Infleqtion's Cloud Infrastructure Engineer lists $97,000–$112,000.

By function, broadly

Hardware and cryogenic engineering roles commonly land in a similar band to senior electrical/mechanical engineering roles at other deep-tech companies, adjusted upward somewhat for the specialization required. Software engineering roles building quantum SDKs or control software track fairly closely with general senior software engineering compensation, since the hiring pool overlaps significantly. Research scientist roles at frontier labs tend to command a premium reflecting how scarce that combination of theoretical depth and publication record is. Business, product, and sales roles at quantum companies generally track standard market rates for those functions, with less of a "quantum premium" than the technical roles.

What moves the number most

Qubit modality matters less for comp than you'd expect — the bigger factors are whether the role requires a PhD (a real premium, especially for research roles), the company's funding stage (well-funded startups and public giants like IBM, Google, and Microsoft generally out-pay early seed-stage companies on cash, though equity can offset that), and location or remote flexibility, same as any tech hiring market.

A note on equity

Early-stage quantum startups often lean harder on equity than cash relative to what you'd see at a public company — worth factoring into any comparison, and worth asking about explicitly rather than assuming a headline number tells the whole story.

Frequently asked questions

What's the average salary for a quantum computing job?

It varies enormously by function, company stage, and whether a PhD is involved — there isn't a single honest average worth quoting. Hardware and software roles track fairly closely with equivalent deep-tech and general software compensation; research scientist roles command more of a premium.

Do quantum computing companies pay more than typical tech companies?

Not uniformly. Well-funded quantum companies and public giants like IBM, Google, and Microsoft pay competitively, but early-stage quantum startups often lean on equity more than cash, similar to any early-stage deep-tech company.

Does qubit modality affect salary?

Less than you'd expect. Degree requirements, company funding stage, and location matter more to compensation than which qubit modality a company works with.

What's the real median salary on quantum job postings that actually disclose one?

On our own board, about 13% of active postings disclose a salary range, and the median works out to roughly $173,000, spanning about $75,000 to $425,000. It's a small, self-selected sample — companies willing to publish a number tend to already be comfortable with pay transparency — so treat it as one real data point rather than the full market.
